How to use Buddy Talk

Don't be shy! Send out the first message to get things started. We recommend contacting at least 5 people to increase the likelihood of actually finding a buddy.

Be polite, share something about yourself! Tell people about your interests, why you want to learn a new language, what you expect from a meeting.

After exchanging a few messages on Buddy Talk, we recommend meeting in a safe, public space such as a library or cafe. If the meeting goes well, consider exchanging contact info to stay in touch outside Buddy Talk.

Buddy Talk is intended to meet language buddies; it's not a social network. Conversing and getting practical experience with a new language is the main focus.

Stay safe: We do not verify a user's identity, and we do not monitor chats. Please report problematic behavior to the administrator.

Organizing a great meetup

Agree on the time span of the meeting. Start with one language, set an alarm clock and switch once the time is over. Of course you are free to determine when you change, but it is good to have something to keep track of time to make sure that you each have time to practice.

Make sure you are both aware of your language proficiency. Talk about it, or do a language proficiency test together; you can do a quick search on Google to find good ones.

Remember: this is supposed to be fun! Do whatever feels right, conversing and getting practical experience with a new language is the main focus.
